Genesis 7

The Flood

24 verses
  • Chapter 7 of the book of Genesis recounts the universal flood, a catastrophe in which God decides to destroy the earth with a great flood due to the wickedness of humanity. In this chapter, God instructs Noah, a righteous man, to build an ark and prepare for the flood along with his family and a couple of every animal species on earth. Noah follows God's instructions and builds a giant ark, which is big enough to accommodate his family and all earthly creatures. When everything is ready, it begins to rain and the flood waters cover the whole earth. The ark floats in the middle of the water and Noah and his family take care of the animals during the 40 days and 40 nights that the flood lasts. After that time, the water begins to recede and the ark finally lands on top of Mount Ararat. Noah sends out a raven and a dove to see if there are any signs that the waters have subsided enough to flow out of the ark. The dove returns several times, but finally returns with an olive branch in its beak, indicating that the ground is dry. Noah and his family leave the ark, offer a sacrifice to God, and God makes a pact with Noah not to destroy the earth with a flood again. This chapter is important in the Judeo-Christian tradition because it is considered a demonstration of God's power and justice. It is also an example of the importance of obedience and faith, as Noah followed God's instructions even though they seemed absurd and was rewarded for his faithfulness.
